In the morning, we will depart from the hotel and embark on a scenic drive towards Sighişoara, a journey of a few hours through picturesque villages that have long been home to a diverse blend of ethnic communities, including Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Jews, and Romani. As we traverse the rolling landscapes, we will witness the charm of rural Transylvania, where history and tradition remain deeply rooted in everyday life.
Our destination, Sighişoara, is a beautifully preserved medieval town, founded by German settlers in the 13th century and strategically built atop a hill to guard against invading forces. Much of its fortifications remain intact, with watchful towers still standing as silent sentinels of the past. The town’s enchanting atmosphere is shaped by its narrow cobbled streets, its towering Lutheran Church, and its most famous landmark—the Clock Tower. Here, we will explore the museum inside the tower, where a fascinating medieval clock mechanism brings small wooden statues of Roman gods to life each night. Sighişoara is also renowned as the supposed birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure who inspired the legend of Dracula, adding an air of mystery to this already magical setting.
At midday, we will pause for a delightful lunch in the quaint village of Floreşti, where local producers have prepared a feast of homemade specialties. Set in the charming courtyard of a 17th-century estate, this meal will offer an authentic taste of Transylvanian hospitality and traditional flavors.
After lunch, we will continue our journey to Biertan, once a thriving medieval village due to its role as the seat of the Lutheran bishop. As a result of its importance, the largest fortified church in Transylvania was built here—a magnificent structure that now stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the church, we will discover a rather unusual piece of history: the marital reconciliation room, a small house where couples seeking divorce were once confined like in a prison together until they could resolve their differences.
In the late afternoon, we will make our way back to Cluj, reflecting on the day’s discoveries and the timeless beauty of Transylvania’s medieval heartland.

This journey will take us to some of Transylvania’s most breathtaking underground wonders, including the Turda Salt Mine and the spectacular Turda Gorges Natural Reserve. Prepare for an adventure filled with fascinating traditions, captivating stories, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Just 35 kilometers from Cluj, the historic town of Turda has played a significant role in Transylvania’s past. It was here that the landmark “Religious Peace” was signed, granting official recognition to five Catholic and Reformed confessions and making Transylvania one of the most religiously tolerant regions in Europe.
Nestled at the base of the Western Carpathians, some of Romania’s most striking mountains, Turda is surrounded by a landscape shaped by limestone formations, resulting in a terrain of deep caves, dramatic gorges, and rushing rivers. Nearby, we will set off on a scenic hike through the Cheile Turzii Natural Park, a protected area home to rare species of flora and fauna. After approximately an hour of trekking through the breathtaking gorge, we will emerge on the other side of the mountains, where our buses will be waiting to take us back to Turda.
Leaving behind the stunning scenery of the Apuseni Mountains, we will return to Turda, once a thriving medieval town thanks to its rich salt deposits. Salt mining has been integral to this region since Roman times, with the valuable resource being transported all the way to Rome. Under Austrian rule, the mine became a crucial part of Transylvania’s industry, attracting significant investment. Since 2007, following extensive renovations, the Turda Salt Mine has been transformed into an extraordinary museum and cultural center, now one of the most fascinating underground attractions in the world. We will descend hundreds of meters below the surface, explore its vast galleries, and uncover the secrets of this remarkable subterranean world.

We invite you to take a stroll through Cluj’s rich history, exploring its fascinating traditions, remarkable architecture, and vibrant cultural scene, all while experiencing the energy of this modern Transylvanian city.
Our journey begins beside the old Benedictine monastery, the very heart of Cluj’s origins and the foundation of its development. As we walk through the city’s historic streets, we will encounter landmarks that tell the story of its past, including the birth houses of Matthias Corvinus (King of Hungary) and Stephan Bocskai (ruler of Transylvania and a key figure in the Protestant Reformation). We will also explore the old market square, once bustling with guilds and craftsmen, whose beautifully preserved houses still whisper tales of centuries past.
From here, we step into the city’s main square, home to some of Cluj’s most iconic monuments. The magnificent Catholic Church of St. Michael, the second-largest Gothic structure between Vienna and Istanbul, dominates the square alongside the equestrian statue of Matthias Corvinus. We will also admire the Mirror Street, a unique architectural curiosity where houses were built symmetrically on both sides, and the majestic Bánffy Palace, a masterpiece of Baroque elegance.
Leaving the main square, our walk continues to the Babeș-Bolyai University, an institution with an academic tradition dating back to the 16th century. Today, with nearly 60,000 students, it stands as one of the largest multicultural universities in Europe. As we pass through grand palaces that house its faculties and administrative buildings, we will reach the former Franciscan monastery, renowned for both its stunning architecture and near-perfect acoustics. Recently restored, the church has regained its original splendor, offering a glimpse into the city’s religious heritage.
Just behind this historic monument, we will visit Cluj’s only remaining medieval tower, a lone sentinel of the city’s once-mighty fortifications and a testament to its former military aspirations.
Our tour concludes in what was once the lumberjack market, an important gathering place for Cluj’s Romanian community. Here, at the turn of the 20th century, the renowned Viennese architectural firm Helmer & Fellner was commissioned to design and construct the city’s theater and opera house, now one of Cluj’s premier cultural institutions. Standing proudly across the square is the Orthodox Cathedral, built after World War I in a fusion of Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Romanian styles. This architectural gem symbolizes Cluj’s rich and harmonious blend of cultures, a testament to the city’s enduring spirit of diversity and tolerance.

Day 1: Cluj – Sibiu – Transfăgărășan – Bran – Brașov
In the morning, we will depart from Cluj and embark on a scenic two-hour drive to Sibiu, one of Transylvania’s most charming cities. Founded by German settlers in the 12th century, Sibiu has been the cultural and historical heart of the Transylvanian Saxons ever since. A 16th-century Italian chronicler once compared its size to that of Vienna, highlighting its significance.
As we explore the city, we will wander through its three main squares, lined with patrician palaces, guild residences, and craftsmen’s workshops. The medieval fortifications and defensive towers, many of which remain remarkably well preserved, add to Sibiu’s timeless allure. For those who prefer a moment of relaxation, a glass of fine Transylvanian wine in one of the city’s cozy cafés is the perfect alternative.
For art lovers, Sibiu’s museums are a true delight. The most prestigious is the Brukenthal Palace, once the residence of Governor Samuel von Brukenthal, now home to an impressive art collection, including masterpieces by Titian and Peter Bruegel.
After a delightful dinner and accommodation in the heart of Sibiu, we will set off on an unforgettable journey along one of the world’s most breathtaking roads—the Transfăgărășan. Built during the communist era under Nicolae Ceaușescu, this engineering marvel winds its way over 2,000 meters in altitude, cutting through Romania’s highest mountain range. We will drive as far as the Bâlea Waterfall, where a cable car ride will take us to the peak, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
In the afternoon, we arrive at Bran, home to the legendary Bran Castle. Originally built by the Teutonic Knights as a border stronghold, the castle played a vital role both militarily and economically. Its striking position and Gothic architecture earned it a central place in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, making it one of the most famous castles in the world. How much of the legend is true? You’ll have to visit and decide for yourself…
Our evening concludes with dinner and accommodation in Brașov.
Day 2: Brașov – Viscri – Sighișoara – Cluj
After breakfast, we will discover the medieval charm of Brașov, a city deeply intertwined with the history of the Teutonic Knights and the Transylvanian Saxons. While parts of the region were inhabited by Orthodox communities long before the arrival of the Saxons, Brașov’s growth was
largely driven by the great colonization of Eastern Europe, initiated by Hungarian kings and the Pope.
One of the most striking symbols of this period is the Black Church, the largest Gothic cathedral between Vienna and Istanbul. This grand structure stands as a testament to the city’s flourishing development during the Middle Ages, when Brașov was one of Europe’s most important trading hubs, thanks to its strategic location and skilled merchants. Our walking tour will take us through the city’s most fascinating landmarks, unveiling its rich history and hidden stories.
Just before lunch, we will drive to Viscri, a village that has gained international recognition thanks to efforts to preserve its cultural and architectural heritage. One of the most active organizations in this mission is the Mihai Eminescu Trust, which operates under the patronage of HRH King Charles III.
The highlight of Viscri is its fortified church, dating back to the 12th century. Originally a simple church, it was later fortified with massive walls and towers to protect villagers from invaders. Today, its towers house a small museum, offering insight into life in medieval Transylvania. Beyond the church, the entire village is a living museum—most houses, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, are adorned with Bible verses, proverbs, and family crests, all meticulously restored using traditional materials and local craftsmanship. A walk through Viscri is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into a nearly forgotten world.
At noon, we arrive in Sighișoara, one of Transylvania’s UNESCO-listed treasures. Founded by German settlers in the 13th century, this fairytale-like town is perched atop a hill, with its medieval fortifications still standing strong.
As we explore Sighișoara, we will admire its narrow streets, fortified towers, and historical landmarks, including:
• The Clock Tower, home to a fascinating medieval clock mechanism with woodenstatues of Roman gods that move every night.
• The former Benedictine Monastery and the Lutheran Church, offering insight into thecity’s religious heritage.
• The supposed birthplace of Count Dracula, adding a touch of mystery to Sighișoara’senchanting atmosphere.
In the evening, we will return to Cluj, bringing with us unforgettable memories of Transylvania’s historic and cultural wonders.
